Meaning
Substantial modification of the underlying processes, structures or technology that govern how an organization functions. Undertaking a system redesign is necessary when the current methods of production or communication are no longer capable of supporting the company’s growth. The project is complete once the new architecture is fully implemented and the old workflows are retired.
Architecture Shift
Moving from a flat structure to a hierarchical one or from manual tracking to an automated platform requires a total rethink of every daily task. This transition is often painful and meets with resistance from the employees who were comfortable with the old way of working. The cost of this change is measured in both money and the temporary loss of productivity during the learning phase.
Technical Overhaul
Replacing a legacy software system involves a high degree of risk and a massive investment of engineering hours. A founder must oversee this process to ensure that the new system aligns with the strategic goals of the firm. This oversight takes away from other leadership duties but is essential for the long term viability of the product.
Organizational Health
Regular updates to the internal systems prevent the accumulation of friction that slows down a company as it ages. A firm that refuses to redesign its broken processes eventually becomes a bureaucracy where more time is spent on administration than on creation. The price of progress is the willingness to tear down what once worked.
