Meaning
Gradual loss of the original intent and detail of a message as it travels through different layers and nodes of an organization. The phenomenon of signal decay occurs because each recipient interprets and summarizes the information according to their own context and bias. This process results in a version of the truth that is less sharp and less accurate than the source.
Semantic Distortion
Nuance in a founder’s vision often disappears when it is reduced to bullet points or a slide deck by middle management. As signal decay progresses, the urgency and the specific requirements of a project may be softened or misunderstood. This leaves the technical teams building something that only vaguely resembles the initial requirement because the core objective was lost in translation.
Cultural Dilution
Values and norms established by the early team lose their potency as the company hires more people who did not experience the founding. This form of signal decay makes it harder to maintain a consistent way of working across different offices. The energy required to re-broadcast the message is a constant drain on the leadership.
Strategic Drift
Misalignment between the high level goals and the daily activities leads to the company moving in the wrong direction. Reducing signal decay requires frequent direct communication.
