Meaning
Total volume of work and decision-making an individual can manage before their performance begins to degrade. For a founder, operational capacity often reaches its limit during the scaling phase, necessitating the hire of a management layer. This limit is the primary driver for a founder to exit the operator seat and move into an owner seat.
Execution Ceiling
Ceiling for a single person’s output is fixed by the number of hours in a day and the mental energy required for complex tasks. As a company grows, the number of decisions increases exponentially. A founder who tries to hold onto every choice will eventually become the bottleneck for the entire firm.
This slows down the growth and leads to burnout.
Load Shedding
Shedding of the load is the only way to increase the overall capacity of the organization. The founder must delegate entire departments to others who have the capacity to manage them. This requires a high level of trust in the management team.
It also frees the founder to focus on high-level strategy or their eventual exit.
Performance Degradation
Degradation of performance happens when a leader stays over their limit for too long. Mistakes are made, and the quality of leadership suffers. The cost of this failure is high for the individual and the business.
